The social change topic I chose is hunger. More specifically, child hunger. In the United States alone, one in seven people are plagued by hunger. For children, it’s every one in five. One point sixteen million kids struggle with hunger each year in the United States and around the world about seven hundred and ninety-five people suffer from hunger — about one in nine people. In 2013 six point five million children under the age of five died from malnutrition. Nearly half of all food stamp recipients are children, and many times the only meal they get is a school meal, which is either free or reduced lunch. Twenty percent of families are not eligible for government funding either. I chose the child hunger topic because it’s something that comes up a lot with schools. It’s something students become more aware of as they get older and it’s becoming a bigger issue with growing poverty in the U.S. School funding is a factor in child hunger: schools offer a school lunch either it’s paid or not, but that doesn’t guarantee that kids are getting the typical three meals a day. Some schools also offer breakfast and meals during the summer, but it’s a small percentage and a small program. Child hunger has a huge impact because hunger is something that needs to be fulfilled. If kids aren’t getting the proper nutrition they need, it’ll be harder for them to succeed in school and better their education for their future. http://www.foodaidfoundation.org/world-hunger-statistics.html https://mashable.com/2016/07/14/child-hunger-united-states/#BioZ0eyzRaqw
